The Dashboard Spy

An Introduction to Dashboards

Excel School

Welcome to the Dashboard Spy’s famous collection of screenshots of executive dashboards, balanced scorecards, business widgets, or whatever the latest name is for visually-oriented business intelligence tools meant to assist in corporate decision-making.

Here you will find screen after screen of dashboard concepts, implemented projects, and other tools to help you conceptualize, design and implement your business dashboard.

In the spirit of “a picture is worth a thousand words”, use this site as a source book for inspiration. If you are struck by a particular screenshot, please enter a comment. Your input and observations may help someone else. Plenty of comments will make this a more useful community.

This collection is for academic reference purposes only and links are provided to the original sources. If you are a copyright holder and wish to play “Bah, humbug”, please enter a comment to that effect and the material will be deleted. However, I strongy urge that you consider that it would only help yourself to share your work in this high growth stage of a new business phenomenon.

If this site is of interest to you, please help spread the word to others. If you really want to help keep this effort going, please use the links on the Books page to buy books about dashboarding. Thanks in advance.

PS. I nearly forgot to point out that you are currently enjoying the Dashboard Spy Blog. Did you know that it’s actually the companion to a much wider website? Be sure to check out The Dashboard Spy Website at dashboardspy.com. It got lots of goodies such as this neat dashboard wireframing template for you to use in mocking up your dashboards.

  1. Great site and resource for visualization and communication ideas! I talk about various approaches for building dashboards from the bottom up / top down in various blog postings on my site here: http://dougmcclure.net.

Keep it up! I’ve got some stuff I can clean up and send for you at some point!

  2. love the concept—
Sorry for being dunderheaded, but I can’t actually see the screenshots – have tried from multiple PCs but graphics appear as white space?

  3. Awesome site! I have worked for years doing dashboards using Sharepoint and now SAP portals and your site will be a big help in provding information to the customer. Thanks!!!

  4. Thanks for the feedback! I’ll keep these screenshots coming. If you can’t see the screens, you need to view the site directly with a web browser. Point it straight to http://dashboardspy.wordpress.com
Perhaps the feed reader you are using isn’t showing the images properly?
UPDATE: OK, here’s what I think may be going on.

Are you using firefox and have the setting that you are blocking off-site images?

My blog site is bringing in the images from another location. If you have your proxy or browser set to not load off-site images, that is why you can’t see the images. Turn that setting off and you should be fine.

Give it a try and please let me know. thanks

  6. Welcome to the site! Your best bet is to examine as many dashboards as possible. Also, please read as many books on dashboarding as you can find. Try these dashboard books.

  7. Hi Dashboardspy!

I’ve been working on a dashboard project for the last few months, but had no idea what a dashboard even looked like – until I came across your excellent site! Thanks!!!

    P.S. Keep them coming!!!!

    Comment by Ed Bruning — May 3, 2006 @ 8:21 pm

  8. Ed – Yes, I will keep them coming. I've got plenty more where those came from. Your note is kind of funny. Did you mean that literally? Well, now you've got lots to look at. Use the search box on the right side of the blog to narrow down the dashboard screenshots to your areas of interest.

  13. I am looking to create a dashboard to help visualize KPI’s, metrics, and goal tracking for a manufacturing organization. Data sources are simple Excel spreadsheets. Can anyone suggest graphic tools with gauge type visualization that can take its data source from Excel?

    Any suggestions greatly appreciated

  14. Mike. Take a look at the xcelsius product. It’s highly visual and the idea is that it produces flash graphics from your excel spreadsheets. Use the search box on the right side of http://dashboardspy.wordpress.com and type in xcelsius to see a bunch of samples.

Mike, you might try the freeware Dashboard of Sustainability at http://esl.jrc.it/envind/dashbrds.htm
Once installed, press F4 to see the Excel template.

  30. I’m researching for an Association of Business Communication meeting in late Oct. on how communication is changed as a result of dashboards. Let me know if you would be interested in a short phone conversation on how you see organizations changing as a result of dashboards. I’ve interviewed Malik and read Stephen Few’s Design book. The whole topic is exploding. Are you connected with a software producer or a user of dashboards?

  31. Very cool site!

I’m working in investment decision support at http://ITSdoc.org. Lots of cool “dash board” stuff in areospace. I just added two paragraphs to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_dashboard

The aerospace industry has a long history of designing and refining cockpit display systems. In the U.S. the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) have long histories of research into the ergonomic aspects of cockpit design and have conducted extensive investigations of airline industry accidents. Many cycles of primary research and subsequent application of findings have occurred over the history of aviation, involving such disciplines as: Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, Perception, Human computer interaction, Human-Factors_Engineering, and Ergonomics, as they colletively apply to aerospace safety.

Modern aircraft designs have rapidly adopted a fully digital “glass cockpit.” In current systems, instruments and gauges, including complex navigational map displays, are constructed using a standard user interface markup language known as Arinc_661. This standard defines the interface between an independent cockpit display system, generally manufactured by one entity; and the various user applications needing dynamic access to it, such as gauges, instruments, controls, etc., often made by different manufacturers. The separation between the overall display system, and the various applications driving it, allows for considerable specialization and independence.
