Energy Management Dashboard Screenshot from 1995 – monitor home energy use through cable tv

From the dusty vaults of interactive tv ideas, comes this 1995 dashboard collaboration between Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), Microsoft and TCI. PG&E provided the energy applications software and the in-house LAN, Microsoft provided the OS and TCI was responsible for the energy management unit, networking and TV set-top box. The idea was to let a utility customer bring up a dashboard on their TV that allowed them to see and manage their energy usage. This concept was piloted to 30 homes in Walnut Creek in 1995. The trial had to be shut down (too early for its time – costly and cumbersome), but the dashboard itself looks pretty good for its age!

So what or who is The Dashboard Spy? As his about page states, The Dashboard Spy is just a guy interested in the design of enterprise dashboards. He could not find any executive dashboard design source books (or even screenshots of real business dashboards) and so set about creating his own. Finally convinced to post his extensive collection of dashboard screenshots online, he was amazed to find how popular it has become. If you have a nice screenshot of a digital dashboard, balanced scorecard, or any business intelligence graphic to share, please send an email to info _at_ dashboardspy.com.
