Heat maps for stock market dashboards

Filed under: Dashboard Screenshots — dashboardspy @ 5:55 pm

The concept of heat map graphics works very well for stock market dashboards. See this one in action when the nasdaq is open and go here for the underlying technology.

This is an animated gif:

So what or who is The Dashboard Spy? As his about page states, The Dashboard Spy is just a guy interested in the design of business dashboards. He could not find any executive dashboard design source books and so set about creating his own. Finally convinced to post his extensive collection of dashboard screenshots online, he was amazed to find how popular it has become. If you have a nice screenshot of an enterprise dashboard, balanced scorecard, or any business intelligence graphic to share, please send an email to info _at_ dashboardspy.com. Hospital Bed Management Dashboard – Screenshots from bio-terrorism drill

Filed under: Dashboard Screenshots — dashboardspy @ 5:32 pm

Thanks to the Dashboard Spy who sent me these screenshots of a bed management dashboard. The photos are from a terrorism drill conducted post 9/11. It's a long series of screenshots but the dashboard is interesting.

This first shot shows the staff reviewing the drill. Note the whiteboard on the wall serving as a real-life, physical dashboard:

This next shot is one of the staff using the bed management dashboard:

Here is their management dashboard:

Flex / Flash Dashboard for Retail Store Operations

Filed under: Dashboard Screenshots — dashboardspy @ 2:06 pm

A very talented flash/flex developer at http://merhl.com/webdevblog/ posted this demo of a Flex dashboard for retail and online stores. It tracks site members by month, products by collection, wishlist and referrals and top stores by state.   See the dashboard screenshot below, but definitely go to the interactive demo so you can try out the various controls. I particularly like the actions within the charting element in the upper right. You can select a chart via a drop down control and also toggle the view from a chart to a table. The line graph has a slider control so that you can move along the time axis. What is also neat is how the various parts can be enlarged, reduced and dragged around.

Helmet dashboard screenshots – a digital dashboard that can mean the difference between life and death

Filed under: Dashboard Screenshots — dashboardspy @ 12:26 pm

Talk about a need for real time tracking on an executive dashboard! The next generation joint strike fighter, the F-35, will not have a Heads Up Display on the windshield but will have a special helmet-mounted dashboard that will sync to all onboard systems. Read about this real-lilfe, physical dashboard and see more screenshots at jsf.mil. PS. People ask me why I like to post so many physical items when this is a blog about digital dashboards. My background in design leads me to firmly believe that unless digital dashboard designs offer an acceptable "realness" that makes sense to the user, the product will feel unnatural and not be embraced . The best way to ground our digital designs is to study physical equivalents. You can bet that the effort going into this dashboard is for real – we're talking literally a life and death dashboard.
