Alarm status dashboard

Filed under: Dashboard Screenshots — dashboardspy @ 8:37 pm

Another in the series from the Nimsoft business dashboards at http://www.nimsoft.com/dashboards/gallery.shtml, this one shows the alarm status of geographic locations. The company states: “This dashboard utilizes a blue background with simple, but effective, line objects to represent various business locations. Alarm filters are defined per line object and when alerts should occur at any given location their highest level severity will be displayed. Selecting a line object will show its alerts in the NimBUS alert list just below.”

So what or who is The Dashboard Spy? As his about page states, The Dashboard Spy is just a guy interested in the design of business dashboards. He could not find any executive dashboard design source books and so set about creating his own. Finally convinced to post his extensive collection of dashboard screenshots online, he was amazed to find how popular it has become. Soda machine dashboard

Again, from the Nimsoft dashboard gallery at http://www.nimsoft.com/dashboards/gallery.shtml, here is a dashboard developed to monitor a soda machine. This is for real! As stated, “this creative dashboard was created to monitor the inventory in their office soda machine.  It provides real-time visibility necessary to address low inventory levels, and should the unit temperature begin to rise to a warning level, a service person can be contacted before the refrigerated product is compromised.”

Microsoft Excel 2007 Video on Business Intelligence

Filed under: Dashboard Screenshots — dashboardspy @ 3:09 pm

You’ve got to watch the Channel 9 video at http://channel9.msdn.com/Showpost.aspx?postid=164396. As Charles Torre (Microsoft Technical Evangelist) says in his post, “Is there any business intelligence out there? Mike Arcuri, group program manager on the business intelligence team shows off Excel 12’s new features for looking at how your business is doing.”

The video is a must-watch for seeing how Office 2007 and Excel 12 in particular will make business intelligence even easier to obtain. Excel will contain dashboard features! Arcuri defines a dashboard as “a bunch of parts that show relevant, related information in a coherent way, on the same screen.”

Arcuri presents the features via a business scenario. It is a non-technical discussion that all business users should listen to. It concentrates on “what’s going on” and “why”.

I’ve captured some stills of the dashboard from the video.

Here is the main page from the demo. It’s a Sharepoint page with webparts:
